DO I NEED AN SSL CERTIFCATE?

What is a SSL Certificate and Does my Website Need one?

Do I need an SSL Certificate?WHAT IS SSL?
SSL Certificates basically make your website encrypted so it is less likely or more difficult to be hacked or content stole. So why would I need an SSL Certificate I hear you ask. Well for quite a few more reasons than you would think.
  • You have an online shop that requires credit card transactions
  • You have a member login section
  • You have files being uploaded to your website
  • You have content you want to keep secure
More importantly Google has apparently released news that websites with a SSL Certificate will be deemed more trustworthy as it is more secure and safe.  And therefore will more likely rank higher vs other websites without a SSL Certificate!

SSL Certificates used to be a surefire way for anyone to see if a website is trustworthy and secure. I think this was mainly down to the expense. However SSL Certificate prices have come down in the past year or two and you can now get them for free with certain website builders. So an SSL certificate now is a must for any website if you want to appear trusted and safe.

MORE SSL CERTIFICATE INFORMATION
SSL Certificates create a padlock and therefore a https protocol (over port 443) that only allows secure connections from a web server to a browser.  SSL is used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently is becoming the norm when securing browsing of social media sites. SSL Certificates secure:
  • A domain name, server name or hostname
  • An organisational identity (i.e. company name), i.p. address and location
  • Any business needs to install the SSL Certificate to its web server to create secure sessions with internet browsers.
Depending on the type of SSL Certificate applied for, the organisation will need to go through various levels of vetting.

When installed, it is possible to connect to the website over https://www.domain.com, as this tells the server to establish a secure connection with the internet browser. When a secure connection is established, all web traffic between the web server and the web browser will be apparently totally secure. Browsers will tell visitors a website is SSL secure via several visible trust indicators, most notably the HTTPS

Are SSL Certificates Worth it?
SO with the cost of a SSL Certificate being anywhere from £40 up to over several hundreds per year, depending on type and reseller, is it WORTH IT?

Well let the TRIAL BEGIN. So over the next few weeks I will trial this and report back.

SSL CERTIFICATE RENEWALS
If you now perform any web search it is very rare that you find a website in search engine results that does not have a SSL certifcate. But not that rare for low traffic keywords. If a you or another website were using a SSL certificate and now don't, when you visit the page again it will either show up with a warning or not at all and will appear as a broken link. And may render some websites useless unless the user chooses to ignore the warning.

Also I am finding this issue if the new SSL certificate has not been set up properly and in this instance you need to contact your hosting company.

SSL CERTIFICATE UPDATE

SSL Certificate UpdateSSL UPDATE
There are a couple of things to watch out for if you install a SSL Certificate. Most of these issues only appear as errors, but could restrict access to certain files and could potentially be a problem for SEO. Especially if you have recently update your website to an SSL Certificate. Simply you need to make sure that everything within the website now uses https and other sources that have an SSL certificate. In the early days there were some large platforms (weebly included) that had failed to update its own internal and external links to https even though they were being delivered as https.

If you are using an SSL Certificate it is prudent that you make sure that:
  1. All your internal links within the site are now using https
  • resource links (images, favicons, opengraph, etc)
  • page links (canonical urls)
  • image links
  • blog links
    2. Links to your website from elsewhere are now using https, this needs to include
  • social media links (i.e. facebook, blogger. instagram, pinterest. etc)
  • directory links (yell, yelp, trip adviser, google business, google webmaster, etc)
  • external blog posts (blogger, medium, reddit, youtube, etc)
    3. When linking to external sites make sure they are https including:
  • links to external pages (wiki, reviews, trustpilot, etc)
  • links to RSS feeds (internal or external)
  • links to CDN (images, fonts, files, etc)
  • links to external web files (i.e. fonts)

When installing an SSL Certificate it's worthwhile you make sure you have enough time make all these necessary website changes. Because this could result in a drop off of traffic in some circumstances.
